8mm/Super 8mm Telecine Project

This project came about because I had some old 8mm and Super 8mm films spanning from the 1950’s to the mid 1980s. At some point in the 2000’s, I transferred some of them by projecting onto a screen and using a DV video camera. The result, in DV’s SD resolution, was not great: There are many 8mm/Super 8mm homemade telecine projects on the internet. The approach I settled on involved modifying an old Eumig 810D dual 8mm/Super 8mm film projector and taking a still image of each frame directly off the projector’s film gate with a DSLR. Peter Stevick's COA Lobby Movie

This is Peter Stevick’s COA Lobby Movie, said to be Spring Term, 1980. It was filmed in super 8mm and newly transferred to digital (process described below). What’s interesting about this movie is that during the course of filming it, virtually every person who was at COA at the time – students, faculty, staff, walked through the lobby (this was the lobby in the Main Building which was destroyed in the fire). American Nazis.

Here’s a cringe-worthy story on how the family of the woman killed last year in Charlottesville has kept her grave secret to keep it from being desecrated by Neo-Nazis. Forget the minimizing term Neo-Nazis as there ain’t nothing Neo about them. What gets me is that my father fought and helped defeat the Nazis in WWII as a seventeen year old kid from South Boston. My first paycheck was when I was 14, in 1973. So, the graph below shows that the gap between productivity and a typical worker’s compensation has increased dramatically since 1973. Basically, my whole working life has been working harder for less money.
